Plasma-Derived Extracellular Vesicles Reveal New Insights into Acute Stroke Pathophysiology: A Collaborative Breakthrough

4.6.25

Geneva, Switzerland and Barcelona, Spain (June 4, 2025) – A new study published in the Journal of Proteomics provides compelling insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying acute stroke through the proteomic analysis of plasma-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs). The work, titled “Proteomic analysis of plasma-derived extracellular vesicles: Insights into acute stroke pathophysiology”, marks a milestone in stroke molecular insight and exemplifies a fruitful collaboration between the founders of ABCDx and their respective research institutions.

This pioneering research was jointly conducted by Sandrine Reymond, Lyssia Gruaz, and Prof. Jean-Charles Sanchez at the University of Geneva (UNIGE), and by Dr. Joan Montaner and Anna Penalba at the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR) in Barcelona and the Institute of Biomedicine of Seville (IBiS).

Using advanced mass spectrometry and supervised machine learning, the team analyzed the protein cargo of EVs isolated from plasma samples of patients with various stroke subtypes and controls. The results revealed distinct proteomic signatures in patients with large-vessel occlusion, hemorrhagic stroke, transient ischemic attack, and stroke mimics. These findings suggest a critical role of inflammation and coagulation pathways in acute stroke events and support the growing interest in EVs as biomarkers for rapid stroke subtype differentiation.

Prof. Jean-Charles Sanchez, Co-founder ofABCDx and principal investigator at UNIGE, commented:

“This study reflects not only the scientific excellence of our teams but also the translational spirit that drives our work at ABCDx. Together with Dr. Montaner, we are committed to bringing molecular insights from the lab to the bedside.”

This publication exemplifies the deep integration between academic research and entrepreneurial innovation driving ABCDx’s mission to revolutionize brain injury diagnostics.
